HYDERABAD: All those living in huts, on roads and ‘nalas’ in the twin cities would be provided houses within one-and-a-half years and the poor living in rented accommodation would be given shelter subsequently, according to Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy.

He made the announcement at the swearing-in function of Danam Nagender as president of the Greater Hyderabad Congress Committee. Mr. Nagender was projected as GHMC mayoral candidate by Sarve Satynarayana, MP. Mr. Satynarayana said everyone was keen on seeing him as Mayor.

A festive atmosphere pervaded across the sprawling Public Gardens upto Lalitha Kala Thoranam, the venue, which was swamped with a sea of posters depicting Mr. Nagender and other Congress leaders.

As many as 13 ‘Indiramma rathams’ to take the message of various development programmes to each of the 13 municipalities in GHMC were later flagged off by Dr. Reddy and AICC general secretary in-charge of Andhra Pradesh M. Veerappa Moily.

Special package

V. Hanumantha Rao, Anjan Kumar Yadav, MPs, G.S. Rao, In-charge APCC president, K. Keshava Rao, former APCC chief and other leaders attended.

Dr. Reddy, while referring to Anjan Kumar Yadav’s demand for a special package for Secunderabad on the lines announced by the Government for the old city, said a Rs. 27,000-crore package was being implemented for GHMC. It included Rs. 9,000-crore Metro Rail project and Rs. 5,000-crore Outer Ring Road.

The Chief Minister said 60 lakh pensions for old people, disabled and others would be given from April next. He was keen to ensure Rs. 1 lakh crore loans were extended to DWACRA and SHGs .

Mr. Moily urged party activists to identify shelterless people without any political discrimination.
